Open Nominations for the 7th Annual ADC Judges Night “Guardian of Justice” Award

On March 11, 2008, the ADC Michigan Advisory Board held its periodic meeting and announced the open nominations for judges to receive the “Guardian of Justice” Award, which will be presented at its Annual Judges Night Reception on September 23, 2008. The deadline for nominations is April 18, 2008. The Advisory Board will accept nominations of judges ONLY. To submit a nomination, or to contribute to/assist in this important program, please email Nadia Fadel, at: nfadel@adc.org.



ADC and AAI Deliver Letter to Secretary Rice Regarding American Entry Into Palestinian Territories
Washington , DC |The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) in coalition with the Arab-American Institute (AAI) and 29 Arab American organizations have sent a letter to US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice expressing continued concern over the treatment of Americans attempting to legally enter the Occupied Palestinian Territories by the Government of Israel. The letter states the signatories’ concern regarding the ongoing burdensome bureaucratic requirements, harassment, and humiliation that Americans of Arab (and particularly Palestinian) descent often face when trying to enter Israel or the Occupied Territories . ADC Michigan Meets with Chinese Delegation
On Friday, March 14, 2008, ADC Michigan staff members, Delia Habhab and Nadia Fadel, met with a delegation from The Peoples Republic of China , which was visiting the U.S. under the auspices of the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. The program is intended to connect Muslims in China and the U.S. , in an effort to strengthen ties and enhance understanding between the Chinese and American Muslim communities. Among the topics discussed were common issues of discrimination, racial profiling, and the ongoing struggles faced by Arab Americans and Muslim Americans following the national tragedy of September 11.


ADC Meets With Delegation from the University of North Carolina ’s Service Learning Initiative

On Thursday, March 13, 2008, ADC Michigan met with a delegation of 12 students from the University of North Carolina ’s service learning initiative. The group visited ADC as part of their journey to the Detroit/Dearborn area to engage in a service learning project focusing on civil rights in the Arab American community of the Detroit area. ADC met with the delegation and informed the students about the functions of the organization and its programs, and discussed issues related to the hundreds of cases of discrimination that the ADC Michigan office handles each year. "ADC welcomes delegations from throughout the U.S. and across the globe, who visit our office to learn about the role and challenges that ADC Michigan takes on, in dealing with civil rights amidst the largest concentration of Arab-Americans in the Nation," said Nadia Fadel, Director of Policy & Community Affairs.



Detroit Urban League to Hold Annual Banquet

On Thursday, March 20, 2008, at 5:30pm, the Detroit Urban League will hold its 29th Annual “Salute to Distinguished Warriors” dinner at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance. This annual gathering honors outstanding individuals for their civil and human rights contributions to their communities. ADC Michigan congratulates the Detroit Urban League on another year of great success, and is proud to sponsor this distinguished event. Deadline Approaching for 2008 Jack G. Shaheen Mass Communications Scholarship

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is currently accepting applications for the 2008 Jack G. Shaheen Mass Communications Scholarship. Jack G. Shaheen, PhD, is the world's foremost authority on media images of Arabs and the author of Reel Bad Arabs, Arab and Muslim Stereotyping in American Popular Culture, Nuclear War Films, and The TV Arab. The deadline for applications is April 12, 2008. Dr. Shaheen established this scholarship through ADC to recognize Arab-American students who excel in media studies. Recipients of the scholarship will be announced and presented at ADC's 2008 National Convention, "Securing the Principles of Liberty," which will be held on June 12-15, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C. Muslim Elected to Congress

On Tuesday, March 11, 2008, Indiana Congressman, Andre Carson, became the second Muslim to be elected to Congress. Carson, a Democrat, won in a special election after his grandmother, the late U.S. Representative Julia Carson, passed away. In a special election, Carson won against his opponent, Republican Jon Elrod, with 53 percent of the vote. Carson, who converted to Islam over ten years ago, will be the second Muslim to join Congress, after Minnesota Congressman, Keith Ellison.
