Leader of Palestinian community in Norway meets with Socialist Youth League
Thirsday the
9th of February Audun Herning, leader of the Norwegian Socialist Youth
League (SU) met with the leader of the Palestinian Community in Norway Nidal
Hamad.
During the
meeting Herning and Hamad discussed the latest developments in occupied
Palestine after the elections for the Legislative Counsil for the
Palestinian Authority. The mother party of SU, the Socialist Left Party
(wich is a part of the center-left government coalition in Norway) sent two
observers to the elections, wich also met with the major Palestinian
political parties and different civic organizations.
The upcoming
campaign for solidarity with the Palestinian people that the Socialist Left
Party is to launch this month were also discussed. The Socialist Youth
League strongly supports this campaign wich focus on awareness of the
Palestinian cause, building friendship relations between Norwegians and
Palestinians, and boycotting of Israeli products. The campaign has been
controversial due to the Party's participation in the coalition government
wich does not support boycott or sanctions against Israel. Audun Herning,
wich is also a member of the Central Board of the Party stressed that this
would not effect the campaign and that they are comitted to boycott and
sanctions as a political tool for the struggle against Israeli occupation
and Apartheid.
Nidal Hamad
asked the SYL to put more focus on the issue of Palestinian refugees and
political prisoners in Israeli jails. Herning confirmed the youth league's
support for the right of return and freedom for prisoners and said these
issues were to be discussed on their next national board meeting.
The latest
developments after the publishing of drawings of the prophet Mohammed were
discussed as well. Herning said that he strongly opposed the drawings and
the the negative picture of Muslims common in some Western media.

Den Palestinske Forening i Norge møtte Sosialistisk Ungdom

feburar møtte leder i Sosialistisk Ungdom (SU) Audun Herning med Nidal
Hamad, leder for Den Palestinske forening i Norge.
På møtet
diskuterte Herning og Hamad den siste utviklingen i det okkuperte Palestina
etter valgene på den lovgivende forsamling for de palestinske
selvstyremyndighetene. SUs moderparti, Sosialistisk Venstreparti sendte to
observatører til valgene, som også møtte representanter fra flere større
palestinske partier og NGO'er.
SVs kommende
kampanjen for solidaritet med det palestinske folket, som skal starte denne
måneden, ble også diskutert. SU støtter aktivt denne kampanjen som fukuserer
på informasjonsarbeid om palestinernes sak, vennskapsforbindelser mellom
palestinere og nordmenn og boikott av israelske produkter. Kampanjen har
vært kontroversiell på grunn av partiets deltagelse i koalisjonsregjeringen,
som ikke støtter boikott eller sanksjoner mot Israel. Audun Herning, som
også er medlem av SVs sentralstyre, la vekt på at dette ikke ville ha
betydning for kampanjen og at de sto fast på boikott og sanksjoner som et
politisk virkemiddel i kampen mot israelsk okkupasjon og apartheid.
Nidal Hamad ba
Sosialistisk Ungdom om å sette fokus på palestinske flyktninger og politiske
fanger i israelske fengsel. Herning bekreftet ungdomsorganisasjonens støtte
til flyktningenes rett til å vende tilbake og frihet for palestinske fanger
i Israel, og sa at dette ville bli diskutert på organisasjonens neste
landsstyremøte.
De siste
hendelsene etter trykkingen av tegningene av profeten Mohammed ble også
diskutert. Herning sa at han var sterkt i mot tegningene og det negative
bildet som blir tegnet av muslimer i en del vestlig media.
